Glendale Street
Glendale Street is a short dead-end street in North Billerica, running northwest from Mcdonough Way toward Call Street in the Concord River Park Annex. It was laid out on the "Plan of Concord River Park Annex, North Billerica, Mass.," drawn by Whitman and Howard, civil engineers, of Boston and dated March 25, 1911, for the heirs of Owen Murningham, who had bought the ten acres from Robert Call in 1880; the plan was not recorded until November 25, 1913 (Plan Book 31, Plan 10). The plan shows three parallel streets 40 feet wide running about 650 feet from Call Street, Wedgemere Street, Glendale Street and Myrtle Street, with Woodland Road across their far ends. Glendale Street, the middle one, had house lots on both sides. Like its neighbors it carries an ornamental plan name; no record explains it.
Only Myrtle Street was opened. The directories of 1916 to 1931 list Myrtle Street and Westland Road (the plan's Woodland Road) but not Glendale Street, which remained a line on the plan for more than seventy years. At the fall town meeting of 1989, on October 17, the town voted to discontinue the end of Glendale Street at Call Street, "a way 40 feet wide and 113 feet, more or less, long," keeping a drain and utility easement. About 1988 houses were built at the far end of the street, reached by the new McDonough Way, which runs across the far ends of the three streets about where the plan drew Woodland Road; the Kasher Corporation sold the house on Glendale Street in 1989. Glendale Street today runs about 190 feet from McDonough Way to a dead end; the rest of the 1911 line was never built.
Glendale Street was on the list of streets proposed for acceptance at the spring town meeting of 2002, but it was left out of the motion that accepted Wedgemere Street, and a second article that fall was dismissed. It was finally accepted at the fall town meeting of 2019: on October 3, 2019, by 165 votes to 5, the town accepted "Glendale Street, from McDonough Way to dead end, approximate length 190' and 40' width right of way," as shown on a roadway survey of April 23, 2019, together with McDonough Way. The street was not on the official town map of 1831, and its name has not changed since 1911.
